When entering into the creative process, a cycle is created. The immediate ideas or questions pursued end up transformed, distorted, blown-up, watered down, and re-mastered into a physical existence. Though the starting point for my work is always personally involved, it exists through an interaction of materials, building into a basic query within the human emotional and psychological parameter. Visual, audible, and physical elements are used to create a dialogue of comparison and contrast.
Through installation, I use rooms, walls, and corners in metaphorical allusion. Their traditional existence as simple structures is redefined and given a voice, articulate with the surrounding materials. Video within these installations provides an immediate visual friction between the reality of the physical space and the fictional world on the screen. The video often takes on the role of defining fantasy, whether portraying the ideal or iconic images springing from popular culture. Sound is often used to distinguish space, but not always in the physical sense. At one moment, sound may be a familiar entity, such as a recognizable musical composition, while the next it is sheer intangible and aural sensation. Time plays into all my work like a hidden hand. It becomes the subliminal narrator, with metronomic rhythm and periods of motionless pierced by sudden rupturing episodes.
In single screen video works, building and expressing narrative concepts are explored. Friends and family are often asked to become involved with the work, becoming central to the process. Like in the installations, a combination of elements creates a dialogue. The relationship created between the simple actions they are asked to do and the artist working the camera becomes a narrative in of itself. Though continuing with experimental work, I also look to bold visuals and the voice for the simplicity of expression.
My choice of medium and execution is always a direct relation to the viewing audience whether in a gallery, public or theatre setting. The role of the viewer becomes an important element in the work. Their movements through the space, involvement with the time aspect, come into play with the final realization of the work. Language within the work evolves from a combination of viewer experience, memory, expectation, satisfaction, and disappointment.
